AI Writes Code. Who Owns the Consequences ?
Your developer just shipped in one afternoon what used to take a week. The demo works. The client is happy.
Now ask the question most teams skip. If that code leaks customer data six months from now, whose name goes on the incident report?
The AI won’t be the one answering for it.
Who Owns the Code?
When AI-generated code breaks, three things happen. Customers notice. Money is lost. Someone has to fix it.
None of that lands on the AI tool. It won't answer the angry email, explain the outage to your board or cover the cost of a breach.
The business that ships the code owns the consequences. Inside that business, someone has to own the code itself. That person needs enough experience to know what "looks fine" can hide.
Where the Consequences Land
The risks of unreviewed AI code show up in three places. Each one costs more the longer it goes unnoticed.
Security
A 2026 study from Singapore Management University analyzed more than 300,000 AI-authored commits across 6,299 GitHub projects. AI tools introduced about 1.5 times more security issues than they fixed, and nearly 23% of all issues were still unresolved months later.
The problems are easy to miss: outdated libraries with known flaws, weak login handling and API keys left in the source code.
None of this stops the code from working. It passes the demo and fails the first time someone looks for a way in.
Scalability
Code that works for 50 users can fail at 5,000.
AI solves the problem in front of it. Ask for a customer list and it may load every record at once. That's fine with 200 customers. With 200,000, the page times out and the server runs out of memory.
Database queries inside loops, missing indexes and no caching all behave the same way. They are invisible in testing and expensive in production. Fixing them during a traffic spike costs far more than planning for growth from the start.
Maintenance
Software spends most of its life being changed, not written. That only works if someone understands the code well enough to change it safely.
The trend is already visible. GitClear's 2026 research analyzed 623 million code changes and found copy/pasted code rose from 9.4% of changed lines in 2022 to 15.7% in 2026. Refactored code, the sign of a codebase being cleaned up, fell from 21% to under 4%.
In simple terms, codebases are getting more duplicate code and less cleanup. When developers don’t understand the code, it becomes harder to make changes safely.
Why Oversight Matters More Now
It's tempting to think AI reduces the need for senior oversight. In reality, it raises the stakes.
A developer who once wrote 200 lines a day can now produce 2,000. Every line is a place where something can go wrong. More code, produced faster, means more surface area for mistakes.
Review time hasn't kept up. When the same people check ten times the code, small issues slip through and pile up into security gaps, slow pages and fragile features.
AI code also looks clean and confident, so those problems stay hidden until they cost real money.
Every AI-assisted project needs one experienced person who owns the result. Who is that person on yours?
What Good Oversight Looks Like
Good oversight doesn't mean slowing down. It means building checks that keep pace with AI.
- Every change is reviewed and approved by someone who knows the system.
- AI-written code goes through the same unit, integration, security and load tests as any other code.
- Architecture decisions stay with experienced developers who have seen systems fail.
- Every part of the codebase has a named owner, no matter who or what wrote it.
How Esco Logics Works
This is how our team builds. We use AI where it genuinely saves time, and senior developers stay responsible for what goes into production.
Take CEC Material Handling Solutions. Their e-commerce site leaned on too many third-party plugins, which created security risks and slow load times. They also had more than 2,000 products across 30+ categories to manage.
Our team cleaned up the plugin setup, fixed the performance bottlenecks and restructured the catalog. The result was a faster, more secure platform that is far easier to maintain. Those are the same three areas where unchecked AI code tends to fail.
Whether we're building custom software from scratch or stepping into an existing codebase through our full stack development team, the people who design the architecture stay accountable after launch. That's how we've kept client platforms running for over 15 years.
Move Fast with Experience
AI isn't going away, and teams that ignore it will fall behind. But the consequences of code haven't moved. Security, scalability and maintenance still belong to people, and those people need experience.
The smartest teams aren't choosing between speed and safety. They let AI handle the first draft and rely on experienced developers to make sure the result holds up under real users, real traffic and real attackers.
If you're building with AI, or sitting on AI-written code you're unsure about, get in touch with Esco Logics. Our team will review where you stand and tell you honestly what's solid and what needs work.

- No. AI is a real productivity gain. Just pair it with code reviews, testing and experienced oversight.
- The business that deployed it. Exact liability depends on your contracts and local laws, so check with a legal advisor.
- Watch for duplicate code, features nobody can explain and small changes that break other parts of the app. If you see these signs, Esco Logics can review the code and show you what to fix first.
- No. AI speeds up routine coding, but it increases the need for people who can judge whether that code is secure and scalable.
- Security first: input validation, login, exposed keys and outdated libraries. Then performance and readability. Esco Logics covers all three when reviewing AI-assisted code.
